Steven Murphy, President and Vice-Chancellor

Dr. Steven Murphy has served as the fourth President and Vice‐Chancellor of Ontario Tech University since March 1, 2018. He was reappointed by the university’s Board of Governors to a second five-year term, effective July 1, 2023.

He envisions the university as an active space to reinvent learning while championing diversity of thought and expression. He believes experiential and co‐operative learning opportunities provide fundamental training for successful careers. He is renowned for his organizational and human behaviour expertise across business and industry.

Dr. Murphy’s vision for positive change includes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a competency-based learning environment focused on improving the student experience. He champions the notion of tech with a conscience: embedding technology with strong human values for the betterment of society and the planet. He is an ardent supporter of ethically driven AI and its transformative power in higher education. 

In 2019 he guided the university’s evolution toward a distinct and bold new identity, a process that included renaming the university, and refreshing the brand and accompanying university and spirit logos. 

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Human Resource Management, a Master of Management Studies (with Distinction) in the Management of Technology, and a PhD in Organizational Behaviour, all from Carleton University, as well as a Master of Laws degree from the University of Toronto.

He currently serves on Lakeridge Health’s Board of Trustees; the National Research Council of Canada’s Board of Directors; and on USPORTS’ Board of Directors. He is as past Co-Chair of eCampusOntario.
