Dr. Peter Lewis
Dr. Peter Lewis holds a Canada Research Chair in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence at Ontario Tech University and is Director of the university's interdisciplinary Mindful AI Research Institute (MAIRI). He also leads the Trustworthy AI Lab, whose research advances foundational and applied aspects of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Lewis's research explores the relationship between AI and society, with a focus on trust, fairness and accessibility. His work also examines how to create more socially intelligent and reflective AI systems that consider human factors such as norms, values, social action and trust.
He draws on extensive experience applying AI in the commercial and non-profit sectors and has worked with more than 100 organizations on AI research and innovation projects.
Dr. Lewis received the Empowered Kids of Ontario Tribute Award for Partnership in 2025 for his work with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind on AI accessibility, the Ontario Tech Research Excellence Award in 2025, and the Aston Achievement Award for Outstanding Business Engagement and Innovation in 2020.
He frequently delivers keynote addresses and invited talks to government, industry, civil society and academic audiences, including at the OECD in Paris, the Ottawa Responsible AI Summit, the Toronto Public Library Digital Expo and the Canadian Parliament.
Dr. Lewis is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Technology & Society journal and IEEE Technology & Society Magazine (TSM). In addition to serving on Ontario Tech University's Board of Governors, he is a board member of the International Society for Artificial Life (ISAL), with responsibility for Social Impact; Co-Chair of the Steering Committee for the IEEE International Conference on Autonomic and Self-organizing Systems (ACSOS); and a trustee of the charity Sponsor A Gambian Teacher.
He previously served as a trustee and director of the University of Leicester and the University of Birmingham Students' Union. Dr. Lewis has a PhD in Computer Science and an MSc in Natural Computation from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.
